Location and Activities

Sanlucar de Guadiana is quite a special place because it is right on the border with Portugal, the river Guadiana is the natural 'frontera' between the two countries. The river is popular with sailers who are looking for natural and authentic places to stay, and therefor the small harbor in the village is always occupied by sailing boats of different nationalities.

The flora and fauna in this area is rich and diverse although during summertime the sun and heat causes a dry looking landscape. Early spring the landscape is full with flowers and takes your breath away!

Sanlucar de Guadiana has only about 400 inhabitants and is quite a small village. It has two small supermarkets, a bakery, three bars/restaurants, a post office, a cash machine and a tourist office. Twice a week the fish-car will visit the village where you can buy your fresh fish. It is all quite simple (and cheap!), but has all the basics you need! For more elaborate shopping Ayamonte is the nearest bigger town where you can go.

Watersports (canoeing, sailing, swimming) is very well possible. Children can learn how to sail during summertime and the Portugese village Alcoutim opposite Sanlucar has a watersports school where you can rent canoes.

The area here is perfect for hiking and cycling. There are several walking paths but you can also explore by yourself when you like more challenge! The roads are in very good shape and most of the time deserted, so cyclists can go as fast as they like without being afraid of traffic.

The Atlantic Ocean is only 40 km away, and you can either choose beaches in Spain or in Portugal. The Algarve has laidback fishermenvillages and beautiful lagunes, but the Spanish Costa de la Luz is also wide and popular with kitesurfers. Lots of choice!

For culture, shopping and sightseeing you can visit the nearest coast town Ayamonte, take a day - or weekend trip to the beautiful Seville or do a small tour in the Algarve (Tavira, Olhoa, Mertola, Faro). During april-may many Andalusian villages have several 'fiestas and romerias' and if you like to see original flamenco dresses, horses and the lot, we would advise you to try and come during this period!

As we are writing these texts, the last details are being finished of the newest attraction of Sanlucar the Guadiana, 'Limite Zero', a zipline that goes from the highest hill across the river to Portugal. An 'extreme sport event', although you don't have to be very sportive to participate... You just have to like a thrill! We will keep you posted on this!

Sanlucar de Guadiana and its surroundings are  still not very known by the tourists, but this is actually one of the reasons why it still keeps its authenticity and nice, laid back feel. It is not a place where you will get entertained by others, but it is a place where you can entertain yourself just by exploring all the natural ingredients that are already there!

Simply beautiful.
