About us
Let us introduce ourselves:
We are Maaike and Michiel (in Spanish ' Maika' and 'Miguel'), a Dutch couple from Amsterdam. We moved to Andalusia in 2001, because we fell in love with this place and we were ready for a change in our lives. We chose to live an outdoor life on our finca 'Lalalia' and although not always easy, we have never regret we took the plunge!
During the first month
living here, we came across our first rescue puppy, Migo. Maaike started working for a local animal shelter and years later, with like minded people, started their own international animal rescue association, VagabunDOGs. All these years of animal rescue work resulted in -at present- fifteen rescue dogs permanently living with us!
With two rescue cats and two rescue horses our family is now complete. We have done several jobs during all these years, to try and make our living.
For example Michiel works as a geographer for EU projects and the association 3D Environmental Change.
He has also specialised himself in environmentally friendly building, permaculture (we grow many of our own veggies) and cultivating / harvesting olives for making the most fantastic oil!
Besides animal rescue Maaike has written two novels for children, makes and sells her own jam and chutney from organic fruit on their finca, and will soon start teaching Dutch to children in the area. Living in a foreign country means giving up some of your plans and dreams, but with a positive attitude you can be sure you get many unexpected ones in return!
